The Kodaly Quartet of Budapest, founded in 1966, may be best known for their many recordings for the Naxos label, especially their complete set of Haydn quartets. They have, of course, given concerts in many parts of the world. Membership of the Quartet has changed over the years, but they have always retained the serious interpretative powers and natural feeling for stringed instruments asscoiated with the general Hungarian musical tradition. Gyorgy Eder was formerly cellist with the Eder Quartet, also well-known for their Mozart and Shostakovitch recordings on Naxos. Haydn's cheerful Op54 No.1, a cheerful lively work, is the first of a set of three quartets completed in 1788. Numerically his first quartet, Beethoven's Op18 No.1 was comprehensivley revised and is a remarkably mature work with a tragic slow movement said to have been composed with Romeo & Juliet in mind. Less familiar is Kodaly's first of 2 quartets, a big impressive work and more Hungarian in manner than Bartok's compositions of the same period.
