The Pro Arte Piano Quartet was formed in 1989 by members of the world famous Academy of St Martin in the Fields chamber ensemble, whose international tours have taken them to the USA, Canada, Australia and the far east as well as most countries in Europe.
The quartet has recorded for Chandos Records and the BBC and has appeared at several major festivals. Their repertoire includes less well known quartets by Hermann Goetz, Aaron Copland and Sally Beamish (specially commissioned for the Pro Arte Quartet), in addition to the familiar masterpieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Faure and Schumann.
The quartet has played for the Society three times previously. Kenneth Sillito led the Gabrieli Quartet and has been leader and soloist with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. He and Hamish Milne were students together at the Royal Academy of Music where they established a rapport which continues today.
